The conference

The Asia-Pacific Conference of German Business is where German industry meets its partners across the region. Its 19th edition, in Seoul, ran under the theme “Where Germany connects with Asia-Pacific”, and the questions throughout were how German companies hold their place in the region as trade blocs harden, supply chains are redrawn and industrial AI changes how things are made.
Fabian Hoffmann attended as a member of the German-Australian Chamber of Industry and Commerce’s delegation from Australia, alongside German companies operating in Australia and the Chamber’s leadership.

The keynotes

01
Friedrich Merz proposed a global alliance for rules-based trade. What it means for German business here.
02
Han Seongsook on batteries, chips and manufacturing AI, and why Korea and Germany must stay connected
01 / 02
The Chancellor’s keynote at APK 2026
Opening APK 2026 in Seoul, Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the Indo-Pacific is now the economic powerhouse of the century, but that supply chains, sea routes and raw materials can be turned into instruments of power. Germany’s answer is de-risking through diversification, not decoupling. He proposed a global political alliance of like-minded states for rules-based trade, with the EU taking the lead, called for concluded free trade agreements, including with Australia, to be implemented, and welcomed a high-tech agreement with Korea.
02 / 02
Korea’s Prime Minister at APK 2026
Prime Minister Han Seongsook told APK 2026 that four decades of Korea-Germany cooperation have multiplied trade twelvefold and brought investment in both directions. Because the benefits of AI are concentrating in a few companies and countries, she argued, connection between partners matters more. She named three fields for deeper cooperation: batteries, semiconductors and AI in manufacturing, including linking Germany’s Manufacturing-X with Korea’s M.AX Alliance. She expected the new partnership framework to widen cooperation and governments to help business move faster.
